Job Overview

The Lead Backup Engineer will be part of a 24/7 IT backup operations team and will be directly responsible for backups, and related processes at Qualcomm, including traditional tape libraries and backup storage systems.

Required skills:

In depth ITIL process knowledge.

Operate independently, with little day-to-day guidance from upper management

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent problem-solving skills.

Excellent multi-tasking capabilities.

Extensive knowledge on Veritas Netbackup 7.X and above.

Extensive knowledge on TLD and ACS tape libraries.

Experience with backup appliances and software vendors (Data Domain, NetBackup, IBM TSM).

Extensive knowledge on OS (Linux and Solaris).

Extensive knowledge on reporting tools like Aptare and Opscenter.

Extensive knowledge on disk based storage technologies (NAS/SAN) will be an added advantage.

Extensive knowledge on SAN switches(cisco / qlogic).

Good knowledge on scripting (Shell / Perl / Python.

Experience in Investigating/researching new technologies, including software and hardware, based on business requirements.

Responsibilities:

Communicate the teams projects and goals clearly within the team, and to management.

Champion best practices related to enterprise backups, and general IT processes.

Drive innovation and process improvement efforts.

Monitoring status of backups on daily basis and troubleshooting client failures (Servers, NDMP, ORACLE, VMWARE, Exchange).

Monitoring backup servers for any issues related to veritas netbackup and working with Veritas if the need be for resolving issues found.

Monitoring Tape libraries for drive failures / robot failures and fixing them, working with respective vendors for part replacements if required.

Perform Data restores (Server/Database/Exchange/NDMP/VMWARE).

Participate in Backup infra upgrades (patching netbackup servers, upgrading tape drives / libraries etc.).

Perform tape handling activities including coordinating tape rotation activities for domestic and remote sites.

Working with Vendors for tape shipments (inbound and outbound).

Maintaining Tape inventory for all Qualcomm sites.

Ensuring Set standards are being followed.

Contributing to existing knowledge bases and creating new ones as required. Good documentation skills are required.

Contributing towards Automation (new process / tech automation and fine tuning existing ones using Perl / Python or shell scripts).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 4+ years IT-relevant work experience OR 6+ years IT-relevant work experience without a bachelors degree.
